Default Ideas for a rating system

How about instead of a "star" based rating system, we just give a "thumbs up" to the guns we like. The more guns that get a "thumbs up" the higher they're rated.

That way we're not necessarily giving guns bad ratings...just bumping those that we like.

Thoughts?

I think that's a good compromise.

i dont think its good enough. the classic star rating gave an average of the votes represented in 5 stars, the thumbs are too simplistic.

the thumbs give the current number of thumbs ups minus the number of thumbs downs and there's no real way to say how much you like it or dislike it, just a cool or not cool.

with the stars, each voter can give his or her exact opinion of the gun. like if you think the gun is cool, but it looks unclean and unfinished, would you rather give it a 3 star rating or a thumbs up or down rating?

there's just not enough accuracy in general opinion in the thumbs system.

Well, I guess it depends on what the purpose of the ratings serve. My initial plan was not to even show a gun's rating. It would only be logged so that someone could sort through the gun list by popularity. So a thumbs up, or number of stars would be the same thing. However, if I actually display a rating on the weapon's page (and build list page), then yes, a star or numbered system would be better.

What are your guys' thoughts? Would you like to have a weapon's rating displayed?

In my example there would be no 'thumbs down'...you just 'mark' the gun you like...and then when you browse weapons if you sort by popularity, the guns that have been 'marked' the most are at the top. I was thinking this would be more of a behind the scenes thing like TheReaper mentioned...more for sorting weapons when browsing.
